

First, these studies provide information about the presence of homosexuals in large American cities over the past century. This new scholarship bears directly on urban history for three reasons. Inspired by the post-Stonewall liberation movement of the 1970s and 1980s, gay historians became committed to formulating new paradigms about sexual behavior and identity and eliminating old misconceptions about homosexuality.
